Daugavpils Pedagogical University (1993 – 2001)
In 1993 considering notable study and scientific potential of Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute, with the decision of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science it was conferred the status of the university. On March 15, 1993 the constitutional assembly of DPU academic and general personnel and students passed the Satversme of DPU (the Constitution – the main document of the university) and elected the Senate with 47 senators (Chairman Henrihs Soms). For the first time in the history of the highschool a rector was elected by the voting of the assembly. Bruno Jansons was elected the first rector of DPU. This date is being celebrated at the university as the Satversme Day every year ever since.
1953 was the year of consolidation and stability for the future development, democratization and humanization of the university. DPU development conception treated that the main priority is preparation of all levels of teachers in all subjects for all levels of schools. In 1993 studies were organized in five faculties: the Faculty of Humanities, The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, The Faculty of Biology and Chemistry, the Faculty of Physical Education and the Faculty of Music Pedagogy and two departments: the Department of Primary School and the Department of Economics and Sociology. In 1993 the first defense of doctoral dissertations took place. Students’ Council and students’ newspaper „Lai Top!” were also established in 1993.
In accordance with changes in the Highschool Law, in 1996 a new Senate was elected (Chairman Janis Pokulis) and the structure of the university has been changed. Three faculties (the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Pre-school and Primary-school Pedagogy) and three departments (the Department of Economics, the Department of Music Pedagogy and the Department of Sports Pedagogy) were established. The number of academic staff with doctor’s degree started constantly growing. Tutors continued preparation of course books for pupils, facilitate scientific research and are involved in realization of different projects.
Students’ Club, dance ensemble “Laima”, mixed and women’s choirs, Sports club and labour union continued their active work. In 1993 the Brotherhod of Christian Students and DPU Natural Research and Environmental Education Centre were established.
