The aim of the doctoral study programme in solid-state physics is to provide an opportunity to acquire an internationally recognized doctoral degree in physics, prepare highly qualified professionals for independent academic, research, and practical work in the sub-branch of solid-state physics, thus consolidating the scientific research potential at DU and in Latvia in the given branch and sub-branch of science.
The major tasks of the doctoral study programme are:
- to facilitate acquisition of recent scientific information in the sub-branch of solid-state physics, producing independent research work,
- to facilitate acquisition of high technologies and innovative research methods and their practical application,
- to encourage practising of conducting research and academic work in university,
- to encourage doctoral student participation in international research community and facilitate summarizing their research results in the doctoral thesis.
As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the young scientist will acquire and be able to demonstrate:
Kowledge:
- Students can demonstrate that their knowledge and skills guarantee their ability to discern, understand, and analyze theoretical ideas and problems, see their practical application in national economy.
- Students demonstrate having acquired methods of physical and technological research in solid-state physics and adjoining science sub-branches by using modern electronic equipment.
Skills:
- Students can evaluate and process scientific literature related to their research topic.
- They can apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in dealing with a particular research topic, carry out international range scientific projects and research tasks.
- Students can critically analyze the acquired results.
- They have skills of relating their work in physics to the world scientist community, external economic environment, produce research publications in internationally recognized research editions, continuously update their research qualification.
Competence:
- Students are able to make decisions to complete academic and professional tasks and plan their activities in contemporary global and changing world.
- Students can stand competition on the labour market offering their knowledge and skills.
- They can take up the analysis and solution of complex theoretical or practical problems, conducting wide scale projects as well as offer innovative scientific services based on their knowledge.
- They can use the opportunities given by modern information and communication technologies in reaching their research goals.
- They can assess the consequences of applying their knowledge in relation to the external environment, legislation, community.
The study programme “Solid-State Physics” provides students with possibilities:
- to study under the guidance of highly-qualified specialists;
- to participate in international Doctoral student exchange programmes and do research at higher educational establishments abroad;
- to become a proficient, knowledgeable and competitive specialist in the sphere of Physics and adjoining technical scientific disciplines;
- to participate in the implementation of projects related to the theme of research and get payment for this activity;
- to receive scholarship if the student studies for the state budget means.
The research basis of the Doctoral study programme “Solid-State Physics” is DU Guntis Libert’s Innovative Microscopy Centre (IMC), in which there are a number of laboratories equipped with modern research facilities.
