Experience gained during the staff mobility within the framework of the Erasmus + program

From September 12- 16, 2017 Vice dean of the Faculty of Education and Management and a leading researcher of  the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Center of Sustainable Education – Eridiana Oļehnoviča and Professor of Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Center of Sustainable Education – Dzintra Iliško, as well as docent Līga Antoneviča has visited Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences for a staff mobility exchange. Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences the biggest teacher training institution in Lithuania.

Its primary goal has been to educate a highly qualified professional in the chosen field of science and a professional teacher who is able to successfully operate in the fast-changing society, who are knowledgeable about the abilities and skills obtained and professionally active in the national educational institutions of different types as well as in different contexts of international co-operation. Lithuanian institution’s ambition and futures prospects in developing research and challenges in teacher training are similar to Daugavpils University’s challenges that we had a possibility to discuss those issues with the Lithuanian colleagues.

Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies in humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, biomedicine and technologies. We visited the faculty of Educational Sciences.  The main campus of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences is situated virtually at the heart of Vilnius, near a beautiful curve of the Neris, a city main river. Similar to Daugavpils University, Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences y develops the “Green University” ideas, promotes healthy life style and participates in social inclusion development projects. High involvement of the University in a wide spectrum of education activities, lifelong learning development, fundamental and applied research, transfer of knowledge and values is adequately reflected by its slogan, engraved in the University logo: Fiat Lux (“Let there be light”).

Studies at the University are based on the newest scientific knowledge and principles of sustainable development; the quality of the study programs is continuously improved and study accessibility and internationalization is constantly being developed. With the staff members we discussed issues of students’ selection for the studies in the University, as well as processes related to implementing competency – based approach in Educational System In Latvia. Within the framework of a Erasmus program – Eridiana Oļehnoviča and Dzintra Ilisko delivered lectures to the students of Bachelor program students and staff members at the Faculty of Education on challenges of sustainable education and competency-based approach in the educational system. The students showed a curiosity and interest about the suggested issues for discussion.

As an outcome of our cooperation we developed a closer networking with the staff members of Faculty of Education, Encouraged staff and student Mobility within the Erasmus + program. We build our plans for a participation in the international 15th BBCC/JTES Conference on Sustainable Development, Culture, and Education: Interplay of Tradition and Innovation for ESD that will take place in Riga, Latvia; November 16-18, 2017 as well at the international conference organized by the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences:  “Towards Research-based Education”  that will take place in Lithuania, Vilnius, on October 19, 2017. We discussed issues related to Reforms in higher education, Education policy: How can we accomplish what we have agreed upon? Teacher education: How do we prepare for the profession?  Curriculum content: How will the curricular system support learning.

The priority of the university is the development of fundamental and applied research in the field of education. This includes subject didactics, education management, and lifelong learning promotion. The results of the research are of special importance to the development of education in Lithuania. Therefore, it was useful to share issue related to the scientific research on both institutions.
