XXV SCIENTIFIC READINGS
The annual international conference “Scientific Readings” has been organized at the Faculty of Humanities of Daugavpils University since January 1991; therefore its organizers and participants call it January Readings. The days when it takes place are always the last Thursday and Friday of January every year. The conference is the biggest research event at the faculty that represents the major spheres of the humanities, research subjects, methodologies, and interdisciplinary innovations at DU. Among the participants of his annual venue are a large number of well-known and young researchers both from Latvia and many countries over the world.
The mission of the “Scientific Readings” of DU is to bring together researchers to discuss topical issues in linguistics, literary science, history, and culture, applying both traditional, approbated and modern, interdisciplinary research methodologies to characterizing the processes of the humanities, sustain and establish research contacts. Special focus of the conference is on those research trends that the Faculty of the Humanities of DU specialize in – comparative literature, contrastive linguistics, translation studies, regional studies, oral history research, characteristics of the phenomena of periphery and diaspora.
New cooperation agreements are often signed during the conference by the Faculty of the Humanities of DU.
The idea of the conference was inspired by DU Faculty of the Humanities professor, Dr. habil. philol., corresponding member of Latvia Academy of Science, Fjodors Fjodorovs.
The papers presented at the “Scientific Readings” are published in research paper collections added to the international citation index EBSCO: “Comparative Studies Almanac. Journal of Comparative Studies”, “Literature and Culture: Process, Interaction, Problems”, “History: Sources and People”, “Language in the Context of Various Cultures”, “Culture Studies”.
Work-groups of the conference: 1. THE BALTIC LANGUAGES: SYNCHRONY AND DIACHRONY
The participants of the conference are invited to discuss the research of linguistic units of various levels in the synchronic and the diachronic aspect, the research on the Baltic languages in the contrastive and the comparative aspect.
The materials of the work-group will be published in the peer-reviewed collection of scientific articles „Valoda dažādu kultūru kontekstā”/“Language in Various Cultural Contexts” Nr.25 (included in EBSCO database).
Working languages: Latvian, Lithuanian, and English.
2. THE SLAVIC LANGUAGES IN THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT
It is envisaged to consider the complex of the problems related to the research of the Slavic languages from the viewpoint of synchronyanddiachrony, in the aspect of theory and pragmatics.
The materials of the work-group will be published in the peer-reviewed collection of scientific articles „Valoda dažādu kultūru kontekstā”/“Language in Various Cultural Contexts” Nr.25 (included in EBSCO database).
Working languages: Russian, Polish, Latvian, and English.
3. BALTIC GERMAN TEXTS: LINGUISTICS AND POETICS
The section invites the participants of the conference who study texts in German written in the Baltics or the texts in German that are related to the Baltic region; the texts are to be considered either from the viewpoint of linguistics or comparative literary studies.
The materials of the work-group will be published in the peer-reviewed collection of scientific articles „Valoda dažādu kultūru kontekstā”/“Language in Various Cultural Contexts” Nr.25 and the collection of the scientific articles “History: Sources and People” Nr.18 (both collections are included in EBSCO database).
Working language: German.
Die Sektion „DEUTSCHBALTISCHE TEXTE: LINGUISTIK UND POETIK” lädt Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler ein, die im Baltikum in deutscher Sprache verfasste oder mit dem Baltikum verbundene Texte erforschen. Die Texte können sowohl aus sprachwissenschaftlicher als auch aus der Perspektive der vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft untersucht werden.
Die Materialien der Sektion werden im wissenschaftlichen Periodikum “Valoda dažādu kultūru kontekstā” Nr.25 (Die Sprache im Kontext verschiedener Kulturen) oder im Konferenzband „Vēsture: avoti un cilvēki” Nr.18 (Geschichte: Quellen und Menschen), der in der Datenbank EBSCO gelistet ist, veröffentlicht.
Arbeitssprachen: Deutsch.
4. THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: SYNCHRONY AND DIACHRONY
The participants of the conference are invited to discuss the research of linguistic units of various levels in the synchronic and the diachronic aspect; the research on languages in the contrastive, the comparative and the sociolinguistic aspects.
The materials of the work-group will be published in the peer-reviewed collection of scientific articles „Valoda dažādu kultūru kontekstā”/“Language in Various Cultural Contexts” Nr.25 (included in EBSCO database).
Working language: English.
5. GENERATIONS IN LITERATURE AND CULTURE
The section will deal with the phenomenon of generations in the anthropological and historico-cultural perspective. The debates will concern the depiction of family, kin, generation continuity in different kinds of texts, motifs of “parents and children” in the literature of various trends. The papers may be focused also on generation in the aspect of inheriting culture processes.
The papers will be published in the peer-reviewed research paper collection “Kultūras studijas”/ “Culture Studies” Nr. 8 ( included in EBSCO database).
Working languages: Latvian, English, and Russian.
6. BORDERS AND DIASPORAS IN LITERATURE AND CULTURE
The participants are invited to consider the processes of Latvian literature and culture in the context of the world literature and culture with the focus on the regional aspects, the interaction of the centre and the periphery, the national and the European identities by addressing the issues related to the development of Latvian literature in diaspora and the integration of minority literature into the processes of Latvian literature.
The materials of the workgroupwill bepublished in the peer-reviewed collection of articles „Literatūra un kultūra: process, mijiedarbība, problēmas” Nr.16 (included in EBSCO database).
Working languages: Latvian, English, and Russian.
7. HISTORY: SOURCES AND PEOPLE
We invite historians to present the results of their research. There are no thematic or any other (chronological, spatial localization, etc.) restrictions; the obligatory condition it that the paper reflects the researcher’s work with primary historical sources.
The materials of the workgroup will be published in the peer-reviewed collection of articles “Vēsture: avoti un cilvēki” Nr. 18 ( History: Sources and People, included in EBSCO database).
Working languages: Latvian, English, and Russian.
The work-groups organized in the framework of the conference do not envisage the presentation of papers on methodology of teaching. We kindly request all the applicants to evaluate the compliance of the theme proposed with the indicative abstracts provided.
The deadline for applications is 1 December, 2014. The application forms sent after 1 December,2014 will not be considered. The correspondence of every paper to the theme of the respective work-group will be considered by the Steering Committee on the basis of the abstracts submitted.
The notification of the acceptance and the inclusion of the paper into the conference programme will be sent (by e-mail) by 15 December 2014.
Articles developed on the basis of the papers presented at the conference are to be submitted by 28 February 2015. All submitted articles will be blind-reviewed.
The participation fee (including publication)is 50 EUR; it is to be paid at registration or by transfer to the account (by 28 January 2015).
