The aim of the study programme is to ensure the in-depth acquisition of theoretical knowledge and prepare students for independent scientific research activities in the field of economics.
The tasks of the study programme are;
- to enhance critical-reflective understanding about economics as a branch of science in all of its diversity and in general;
- to provide the development of research skills and stimulate their application to solving problems relating to economics;
- to facilitate the development of critical-reflective economic thinking which broadens and deepens the improvement of systems of economist’s professional activities and professional identity.
As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the graduate will acquire and be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge:
Students are able:
- to demonstrate in-depth and specialized knowledge in the selected field of economics, understand most important notions and regularities, understand contemporary development tendencies in theory of economics, scientific and applied achievements, fundamental conceptions, methodology, approaches to economics, which provides the basis for creative thinking and research;
- to demonstrate characteristic specialized knowledge relating to aspects of economics, as well as understanding of respective notions and regularities; to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the obtained information and acquired knowledge in correspondence with the set aim.
Skills:
Students are able:
- to independently apply theory, methods and problem-solving skills to do research;
- to argumentatively understand and discuss complicated economic aspects;
- to apply new approaches to studies and research;
- to use fundamental conceptions and methodology;
- to make conceptual analysis and develop ontological bases when dealing with scientific and applied tasks in the field of economics;
- to apply contemporary theory, methods, systems and means of theoretical economics to dealing with scientific research and applied tasks
Competence:
Students are able:
- to independently formulate and critically analyze complicated scientific problems, substantiate decisions, and, in case of need, make an additional analysis;
- to integrate knowledge from different fields, contribute to creating new knowledge, to the development of research methods, to demonstrate understanding and ethic responsibility for the impact of the scientific research or professional activities on the environment and society;
- to conduct scientific research and obtain new scientific results, apply the latest scientific methods when dealing with scientific and applied tasks;
- to use in practice knowledge of the basics of organizing and planning scientific research and projects according to normative documents;
- to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and critical understanding about the system and tendencies in economics in Latvia, Europe and the world;
- to demonstrate in-depth and integrated knowledge and critical understanding about the interrelations of the theoretical, normative and methodological and interdisciplinary fundamentals between economics and other related sciences;
- to demonstrate critical understanding and personal attitude to local and global problem issues in economics, their impact on the diversity of opinions and values, and demonstrate responsibility when resolving these problem issues;
- to demonstrate originality and scientific approach to resolving problem issues in economics;
- to demonstrate ability to adapt to new situations, openness to changes and readiness to act in unpredicted and changeable conditions;
- to create new ideas within the frame of their theoretical knowledge and experience;
- to professionally design, submit and present the scientific research results.
