The aim of the professional bachelor’s study programme “Law” is to ensure the quality of the science-based professional bachelor’s studies. Students should be able to perform legal adviser professional actions in accordance with international, European Union and national normative acts.

 Objectives of the programme:

  • To educate the fifth level professional qualification specialists in the branch of law, as well as to promote their competitiveness in the changing socio-economic conditions and the international labor market;
  • To stimulate many-sided development of a personality imparting substantial knowledge in their historical, social, economical, political and philosophical understanding;
  • Todevelop the ability to analytically understand law and apply laws and other normative acts;
  • To implement the acquisition of deep knowledge in the specific sector that makes it possible to develop new or improve existing systems and prepare a creative, learning process to provide an opportunity to acquire the necessary leading, creative, and  practical work experience, to promote research in the sphere of law.

As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the graduate will acquire and be able to demonstrate:

Knowledge:

  • in state structure and law enforcement activities of the organization;
  • in legal theory and legal history of the origin and development;
  • in human rights institutions and the regulatory framework;
  • in civil tort, analysis of administrative misdemeanor and the concept of criminal deal;
  • in various sub-legal sciences and procedural law;
  • in the sphere of information technology;
  • in professional ethics and professional communication issues;

Skills:

  • to be competent in  the system of Latvian, transnational and international law;
  • to use of legal sources and application of the law;
  • accurately identify legal problems and to tackle the relevant facts;
  • to consider the rules of professional ethics and the moral standards;
  • to use and adjust to legal theoretical knowledge and practical skills in any job and position;
  • free to speak the national language, to manage the legal terminology and its use in the national language;
  • free to speak at least one foreign language, to know the language of legal terminology and its use;
  • to speak at least in one foreign language at the colloquial speech level;
  • use of a legal methods and legal issues in conflict resolution;
  • to adapt to any requirements of the position held and the corresponding duties;
  • continuously improve one’s knowledge, learn new information and skills;
  • freely communicate with colleagues and customers;
  • use of computer software and other information technology;

Competence:

  • to prepare, organize and carry out the legal problem-solving necessary legal activities in the sphere of material and procedural law;
  • to organize, plan and control one’s subordinates work;
  • to work independently or collectively, together with lawyers and other professionals;
  • to determine the priorities for work assignments;
  • to  make decisions and show initiative;
  • to misdemeanor cases and criminal investigations;
  • to develop and improve communication skills dealing with different professions and age people;
  • to orient in the political, social and cultural issues in the country, region and world.
