The aim of the study programme is to provide professional studies in the field of psychology, which meet national economic and social needs and comply with the EU standards.

The chief objectives of the study programme are:

  • provide professional studies in educational psychology that are based on the fundamentals of the scientific discipline, comply with professional standards, are practice-adequate and corresponding to the modern context of Latvia;
  • educate specialists of fifth-level professional qualification in psychology, providing them with a chance to acquire the qualification of educational psychologist that would promote their competitiveness in the changing socio-economic conditions;
  • ensure an opportunity to create or improve psychologist’s existing professional skills and prepare students for creative, research and practical work in the field of psychology;
  • promote understanding of the psychologist’s professional code of ethics and the organisation of educational psychologist’s professional activity in adherence with the principles of this code.

As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the graduate will acquire and be able to demonstrate:

Knowledge:
is able to demonstrate deep/extensive knowledge and understanding which are aligned with the newest discoveries in the branch of scientific psychology and its professional field and which lay the grounds for creative thinking and research while acting on the interface of different spheres.

Skills:
is able to independently use the theory of psychology, its methods and problem solving skills in order to conduct professional research and perform highly qualified professional functions. Is able to argument and discuss complex or systemic aspects of the professional sphere of psychology. Is able to independently direct the development of one’s competences and specialisation, assume responsibility for the results of staff group work and their analysis, propose innovations in psychology, perform work, research or continuous learning in complex and unpredictable circumstances and, if necessary, transform them by applying novel approaches.

Competence:
is able to independently formulate and critically analyse complex scientific and professional problems in psychology, substantiate one’s decisions and, if necessary, conduct additional analysis. Is able to integrate knowledge from various spheres, contribute to the creation of new knowledge and the development of professional methods of work, exhibit understanding and ethical responsibility about the possible impact of the results of one’s professional activity on the society.
